On 2 and 3 June 1946, the institutional referendum with universal suffrage took place, calling Italians to the polls to express their opinion on what form of government the country should have after liberation from Nazi fascism.
After 85 years of monarchy, Italy became a republic with 12,718,641 votes, which is why 2 June is a national holiday in Italy.
